Bahrain Rugby Football Club History

Bahrain Rugby Football Club (RFC) began in 1971 as part of the British Club, becoming an independent entity in 1974. Initially based near Bahrain International Airport, the club soon moved to Saar in 1977, establishing itself as one of the strongest rugby clubs in the Middle East.

The 1980s marked a golden era for Bahrain RFC, with dominance in the Arabian Gulf League, Arabian Gulf Cup, and Dubai Sevens. During this period, the club’s strength earned it the honor of representing the Arabian Gulf team on multiple occasions.

The Gulf War in the early 1990s interrupted the regional league, but Bahrain RFC adapted, hosting military teams and fostering new relationships. In 1991, the club gained formal recognition through an association with Bahrain’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, strengthening its foundation for future growth.

In 1995, the club moved to a state-of-the-art facility in Janabiyah, featuring a grass pitch, netball courts, and a custom-built clubhouse. This venue hosted the region’s first Rugby World Cup qualifier in 1997. Over the years, Bahrain RFC expanded to include football, cricket, Gaelic football, and netball, catering to its growing membership.

By 2016, the club recruited its first full-time Director of Rugby, leading to success in the West Asia Cup. Bahrain RFC claimed championships in 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2019/20, with its teams continuing to excel in regional competitions.

Today, Bahrain RFC has over 6,000 members and offers a vibrant mix of sports and social events, maintaining its reputation for excellence and hospitality across the region.
